Description
Barhi is one of the few date varieties eaten at the fresh yellow (khalal) stage, when it is crisp like an apple and gently sweet. Left to soften, it turns caramel-like and melting.
Available on the strand or loose from August to October.
The story
Date palms frame the fields of Upper Egypt, where families still harvest by climbing the trunks. Fresh Barhi is a short-season treat, eagerly awaited each late summer.
